Tinder ELO & Premium

If your Tinder profile feels “invisible,” it’s usually because your photos and behavior aren’t sending the right signals. Here’s how Tinder ELO works, and what to change to get more exposure.

Your attractiveness to the algorithm depends on your behavior

The algorithm knows it. The better a Tinder user you are, the more likely you are to be shown to others.

A lot of people think Tinder ranks users by looks, but that’s not how it works. In fact, there are three main factors in how “attractive” you are to the app: profile pictures; behavior on the app (swiping right to like, left to pass); and interactions with others (messages and matches).

The app also favors a lot of small details: How often do you use it? For how long? How quickly—and how often—do you engage with your matches?

Two main things you need to do

It’s simple. First, show Tinder that you’re a high-value, successful user. Second, behave like one and mirror the behavior of other successful users on Tinder.

First: improve your profile

You can improve your profile by choosing strong photos and adding a bio. This is the key to better results and a better score. Think quality. A bad photo can really hurt your rating.

Many people don’t take enough pictures of themselves, or they think it’s pointless to spend time on it. But putting in that effort can help you stand out among other men on the app.

Second: be a model user

Respect yourself and behave like a high-value user. Your usage of the app will impact your ELO a lot.

What would a high-value person do? Swipe right only on people you actually like. If you swipe right on everyone you see, you’ll quickly be seen as non-selective and may be shown to fewer people—or mainly to users who don’t get many likes themselves.

Engage quickly with your matches. Send your first message soon after you match. It’s not in Tinder’s interest to let conversations die, so they’re motivated to reward users who keep things moving. If you engage with your matches on Tinder, your ELO can go up. If you never message anyone, your rank can drop—and that can lead to being shown to fewer users or having limited access.

Is Tinder Premium worth it?

Paying in the app is one way to improve your visibility: you get bonus exposure and are shown to more people. But you shouldn’t rely on it if you’ve had no results so far.

Premium ties into what we just described: paying makes you a “better” user in Tinder’s eyes. That could mean Tinder Plus, Tinder Gold, or Tinder Platinum (often the strongest option).

But we can’t stress this enough: build a strong profile and strong habits first—with quality photos. You can get a lot of quality matches before spending a single dime.
